How on earth have I not seen Auntie Mame until this past weekend? I definitely have a number of films that embarrassingly have not made my screen yet (Apocalypse Now, Easy Rider, you know, mostly dude movies) but Auntie Mame! So up my alley! At last, this past weekend, it happened. Right there on my sofa, I took in all 143 glorious minutes of this amusing and inspiring movie. Oh my, the set design is simply unbeatable! I could not wait for the next phase of her life to happen just to see what changed on the staircase. Not to mention her wardrobe- I mean, who can pull of lace pants like that? Just brilliant, all of it. Rosalind Russell is also a scream and no one could have played the part better. The set design was created by Malcolm C. Bert, who went on to do a lot of TV and various other films, but this is definitely the jewel in his crown (was even nominated for an Academy Award!) If I could change my apartment with the drama and style she does every year, by all means I would. At this point I paint every three months anyway... of course, I lack a grand winding staircase. Oh , Brooklyn. See below for some favorite images:
My absolutely favorite line from the movie is (pinch your nose): "Books are awfully decorative, don't you think." Enjoy and happy weekend!
